Editor Position (part-time)

The Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (RCC) is looking for a student assistant to join its editorial and communications team. The position will start on 1 February 2025 or shortly thereafter. The position is initially for one year, which includes a six-month probation period, and has the possibility of an extension.

The RCC is an international, interdisciplinary research institute located in central Munich. It is part of LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität), and its working language is English.

Responsibilities

  • Editorial support for Springs: The Rachel Carson Center Review and for Seeing the Woods: A Blog by the Rachel Carson Center;
  • Management of correspondence with authors, copyeditors, and others;
  • Drafting, copyediting, and publishing calls, reports, and articles;
  • Maintenance of the RCC websites and coordination of social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn);
  • Research and management of visual material, including clarification of copyright and poster design.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled status (Immatrikulation) in a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree at a German university, preferably in the humanities;
  • Native-level fluency in English. Knowledge of German and other languages is advantageous;
  • Extensive experience in developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Experience in editing texts written by authors writing in English as a foreign language would be especially advantageous;
  • Exceptionally strong English writing skills;
  • Excellent communication and organization skills and the ability to work well in a team;
  • Strong general computer skills. Familiarity with social media, HTML, WordPress, Drupal, and Photoshop is preferred.

The editor will have the opportunity to join the community of LMU graduate students and affiliated international scholars, and have access to various resources and events.

The editor will work part-time (15–20 hours/week) on a studentische Hilfskraft contract at LMU Munich. For this reason, matriculation at a German university continuing through winter 2025/26 is required. Hourly remuneration rates are set by LMU Munich and range from 13.25–19.88 Euros, depending on the candidate’s highest earned degree. The position also comes with four weeks of paid vacation, and the working hours are flexible. As the candidate will be an employee of the state of Bavaria, they are required to have German health insurance. They will also pay German taxes and contributions to the pension system.
