Dear Friends of the RCC,

As Munich finds itself in the throes of its fifth season in the year—Oktoberfest—a busy summer here at the Carson Center with seven diverse conferences and workshops has come to a close. Guests and speakers from over 30 countries have taken part in our summer programs, and we are now preparing for an exciting autumn with lectures, conferences, and the beginning of our film series, “Green Visions,” at the Gasteig

  1. Fifty Years of Silent Spring: In 1962, the modern environmental movement was transformed with the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring. To commemorate the publication and the Center’s namesake, the RCC is soliciting essays for the Silent Spring Essay Competition; entries should reflect on the reception and/or impact of the book. Please help us out by distributing the call for essays to anyone interested.

  2. Recent Events:

Re/cycling Histories: What do cycling and recycling have in common? This question was the focus of a conference on sustainable technologies—both old and new—for conserving resources.

MRI machines and historical archives: The world’s first Neurohistory conference asked how neuroscience can help us understand the past.

Ecocinema: How can films create meaning and provoke emotions about the environment? A workshop brought together scholars from media and cultural studies to examine this and related questions.

Apples, Oranges, and Cotton: A workshop on the history of plantations discussed the environmental challenges of this traditional and global form of food production.

  3. Upcoming Events at the RCC—October and November:
