RCC Newsletter, Issue 06

June 2011

27.06.2011

Dear Friends of the Rachel Carson Center,

The RCC has been a hive of recent activity with ideas and discussions buzzing through the conference room and halls at three recent workshops on diversity, re/cycling, and neurohistory. In addition, the RCC has welcomed several new Carson Fellows and Visiting Fellows from India, England, USA, Lithuania, and Germany.

  1. Northern (high)lights: Turku, Finland is the place to be this week for many RCC fellows and staff members. Eight current and alumni fellows as well as ten staff members will be representing the center and presenting their work at the 6th Biennial European Society for Environmental History Conference. For a complete overview of RCC participation, please click here.

The first ever Turku Book Award, a joint prize from the RCC and the ESEH, will be awarded on June 30 at the Reception of Turku University and Turku City. For more information on the prize and the finalists, please click here.

  2. Young Scholars: This August, the RCC will welcome twenty future environmental leaders taking part in the Global Environments Summer Academy (GESA), a course offered through the Munich International Summer University. The course is co-sponsored by the Global Diversity Foundation and will be led by Carson Fellow Gary Martin and RCC Director Christof Mauch; other RCC staff and fellows will also be part of the GESA faculty. Check out a short film for more information about the participants and the program.

Water-Culture-Politics: As a further initiative for young scholars, the RCC co-sponsored the second European Society for Environmental History summer school in Venice, Italy. RCC Director Christof Mauch directed the summer school and Carson Fellow Donald Worster served as one of the mentors.

  3. Recent RCC Events:

Two alumni fellows, Martin Knoll and Reinhold Reith, returned to the past at the RCC in February 2011 to explore many topics including climate, natural disasters, and agriculture at a workshop they organized entitled, “An Environmental History of the Early Modern Period: Experiments and Perspectives.”

Why do we value diversity? Current and alumni fellows chose this question as the starting point for an open dialogue on social, cultural, political, economic, and ecological implications of biocultural diversity.

  4. In tandem with the ESEH, the RCC is launching an online European environmental history resource—Arcadia—which will feature encyclopedia-like articles, images, and links about sites, events, people, organizations, or species that relate to both nature and human society. For submissions, please contact Andreas Grieger, the Arcadia coordinator.

  5. Want to meet our newest group of Carson Fellows? We’re happy to announce the completion of more fellows’ video portraits profiling Shen Hou, Melinda Laituri, Gary MartinAnne Milne, Lajos Racz, Edmund Russell, Martin Schmid, and Donald Worster.

  6. Silent no more: In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Rachel Carson's ground-breaking Silent Spring, the RCC is sponsoring an essay competition for entries that reflect on Silent Spring's reception and/or impact from a variety of professional, national, or disciplinary vantage points.

  7. The future of environmental history is here - both in print and video form. The RCC is pleased to release our newest issue of Perspectives, ''The Future of Environmental History: Needs and Opportunities,'' edited by Kimberly Coulter and Christof Mauch, which is now available for download online; in addition, a short video summary of the event is also available for viewing.

  8. Upcoming Events at the RCC – June through August:

22-23 July: Moving Environments: Affect, Emotion, and Ecocinema (Conference)

28-30 July: Comparing Apples, Oranges, and Cotton: Environmental Histories of the Plantation (Conference)

4-6 August: Environmental Change and Migration in Historical Perspective (Conference)
