RCC Newsletter, Issue 03

October 2010

18.10.2010

Dear RCC Friends,

There’s a chill in the air and the nights are drawing in, bringing back memories of last year, when the RCC launched its Lunchtime Colloquium. Now in its third semester, the autumnal Colloquium brings a new series of diverse guests speaking on a range of exciting topics. As always, all are welcome to attend. Colloquium has moved across the street to room 001 in Historicum. Check out the Calendar of Events on our website for a complete overview of upcoming talks, lectures, and programs at the RCC. Read on for an update on other RCC activities and news.

  1. Full speed ahead for New Mobility Studies: movement took center stage at the workshop hosted by the RCC in early June.

  2. The university may have been on break, but the RCC has been a hive of activity this summer. Some of our newer fellows presented their work at two summer workshops – Northern Environments were the theme of the August workshop whereas the September workshop played host to the Carpathian Basin, wonder in science, and Romanian forest politics.

  3. For those of you who can’t make it to our Lunchtime Colloquium, but would like to see our RCC fellows in person, the next best thing is now available. The first two of our RCC Fellows film portraits, featuring Gijs Mom and Shane McCorristine, are now available for viewing online. In addition, any of you who missed the Opening Event in July might also enjoy this short film showing some of the highlights.

  4. No Impact Man makes a big impact on Munich: 250 people attended the film screenings and panel discussion on how to achieve a greener lifestyle.

  5. Congratulations to Carson Fellow Stefania Gallini on winning the 2010 Elinor Melville Prize for Latin American Environmental History for her book Una historia ambiental del café en Guatemala: La Costa Cuca entre 1830 y 1902.

  6. The RCC continues to grow! The following new Carson Fellows have joined us since August: Stefanie Belharte, Robert Gioielli, Elizabeth Jones, Emilian Kavalski, Ed Russell, and Jacob Tropp. The RCC would also like to welcome new staff members Ursula Münster (Research Fellow), Andrea Jungbauer (Office Manager), Elisabeth Zellmer (Ph.D. Program Coordinator), Regina Schwarz (Senior Communications Associate), Paul Senker (Communications Associate), and Claudia Whiteus (Communications Associate).

  7. Call for Applications: The RCC and the Global Diversity Foundation announce a summer course, “Global Environments: Socio-ecological Interactions in a Dynamic World,” for Masters or Ph.D. students in August 2011.

  8. If you have missed previous issues of the RCC newsletter, you can now find them online.

As always, to stay up to date on the RCC, check out our website, our Facebook page, or follow us on Twitter

Best wishes,

The Rachel Carson Center
