Ben Tendler Presents Environment & Society Portal at International Workshop

29.06.2012

To help showcase the RCC's work in the digital humanities, Ben Tendler, research associate, presented on the Environment & Society Portal at the recent workshop "Green Revolutions: Fiftieth Anniversary of Rachel Carson's Silent Spring," held at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Convened by the university's Institute for Environmental History, the workshop was an opportunity for academics from a variety of disciplines to present their research on radical change in social attitudes and the physical environment.

The Portal is aiding change as a pioneering tool for making environmental humanities materials more accessible to the public. Its innovations include its ability to help the user (re)visualize chronoligical, spatial, and conceptual connections, as well as provide an interactive platform for scholars and members of the interested public to share knowledge.

Tendler is responsible for the Portal's multi-media collection.

The workshop was intended to enable the cross-pollination of knowledge and ideas between historians and present-minded scholars, as well as to strengthen ties between environmental institutes in North America, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe.

The workshop is among the many events this year commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Carson's influential publication, Silent Spring, which helped catalyze a major shift in public consciousness about humanity's impact on the environment.
