Jon Mathieu on "Die Alpen"

Book Presentation

03.02.2016 at 19:30

Organizer: Deutscher Alpenverein e.V. (German Alpine Club) in cooperation with the Rachel Carson Center

Location: Alpines Museum, Praterinsel 5, 80538 Munich

RCC alumnus Jon Mathieu will present his recently published book Die Alpen: Raum–Kultur–Geschichte as part of the German Alpine Club’s “Bergforum,” a series of discussions based on academic publications about the Alps.

Mathieu’s book, which he worked on during his fellowship at the RCC, examines the deep connections between humans and nature in the Alps. Beginning with prehistoric hunter-gatherers, Mathieu describes the different cultures that have made their homes in this mountain region, from miners and traders to farmers and settlers, and finally the rise of the nature tourism and sports industry. As humans have adapted to the challenges of this harsh environment, they have transformed it into the unique cultural landscape it is today.

The event will take place in German and will be moderated by Christof Mauch.
