In the last years, the amount of waste in Germany has been declining despite an increasing economic growth. The recycling rate of packaging has even doubled to almost 80 percent in the last ten years. Waste is ecologically desirable for some experts because it contains energy which can be recovered. Is the story of the waste industry therefore a success story? Does the waste problem worldwide lead to unstoppable changes of our environment, or is the transformation of waste a solvable problem of the 21st century? How do our European neighbors deal with the problem? Is waste completely preventable as some experts say? Scholars and experts from the industry will discuss answers to these questions in a lecture series taking place in the context of the CAS research focus "Waste in Environment and Society" in the winter semester 2013/14.
