Amanda Boetzkes on "Contemporary Art as Garbology"

CAS "Waste and Society" Guest Lecture

20.06.2013 14:15  – 15:45

Location: Conference Room, Rachel Carson Center, Lepoldstr. 11a

Contemporary art presents us with a preposterous view of the world. That is to say, it imagines the contemporary moment as pre-historic and post-historic. Moreover, it does so precisely by undertaking an archaeological study of garbage, our future ruins. From the perspective of "garbology," and particularly scenes of accumulated plastics, we find a window into our current paradigm of energy management: a paradoxical system in which a drive to consume oil is coupled with a profound need to conserve and stockpile energy.

Prof. Amanda Boetzkes (University of Guelph) is a garbologist and art historian. As part of the RCC supported research cluster '"Waste and Society" at the Center for Advance Research of the LMU Munich, Boetzkes will present on "Contemporary Art as Garbology."

Interested members of the public are welcome to attend.
