The Alps and the Carpathians: Balancing Use and Protection in the Development of Two European Mountain Regions

Workshop

10.10.2012 – 11.10.2012

Location: Alpines Museum des DAV, Praterinsel 5, Munich

Conveners: Julia Herzberg (RCC), Martin Zückert (Collegium Carolinum)

Conference Report - in English (pdf, 188 KB)

The goal of this conference is to compare the history of the Carpathian mountain region with the development of the Alpine region, based on research about environmental and infrastructural history from the Collegium Carolinum’s project “The Development of the Carpathians.” In doing so, the interim results of three ongoing research projects about the Carpathians will be contrasted with case studies of the Alps. The intent is to create an East-West comparison based on interpretations of specific biogeophysical conditions, which should clarify to what extent governmental development and environmental protection efforts and their subsequent effects on the environment and local population differ in the two regions.
